WHAT MY GRANDMOTHER TOLD ME CANNOT BE SMELLED

Video (3 min 42 sec) and blown glass, thickening agent, water, petrol

We are often told stories about our past. These generational narratives are transformed into images and memories. But can we trust these images? In this video installation, childhood home videos are reconstructed using AI-generated images. At one point, the image generator feeds its own reproduction back into itself as a prompt. This video is contrasted with a glass column and its distinct smell of petrol. Interacting with this translational dynamic, the smell carries true memories. What is the role of artificial intelligence in the creation of images and, by extension, memory and the translation of narratives?
