Big Princess Disorder is a work about Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). It highlights the gap between the lived experience of BPD and the language that surrounds it. BPD is highly stigmatised, and publicly experiencing its symptoms is usually perceived as socially unacceptable, so people often endure it alone. Online memes about BPD use satire to challenge stereotypes and become a way for people to cope and find community. At the same time, they can inadvertently perpetuate a one-sided image of what someone with BPD looks like. By inviting the people around us to make the project happen, the work opens up experiences of BPD and breaks down the shame and stereotypes surrounding this ‘disorder’. The connections we have made while working on Big Princess Disorder will continue beyond the time frame of this project.
